Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning

The Associate Dean of Teaching and Learning is a faculty development leader with expertise in digital learning. Housed in HNU’s Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, the Associate Dean leads faculty engagement, training, and professional development related to best practices in classroom, hybrid and online pedagogy, the scholarship of teaching and learning (SOTL), and the innovative use of technology in teaching and learning.  

The Associate Dean also leads HNU’s Digital Learning Initiative, a multi-year grant-funded program to develop innovative, inclusive, and engaging online and hybrid programs at HNU. The current focus of the initiative is completing development of 50 courses for HNU’s online bachelor’s degree completion program with majors in Business, Psychology, and Interdisciplinary Studies.  

The Associate Dean works closely with faculty and staff partners to develop a campus culture that promotes and values excellence and innovation in teaching and learning and provides resources and support for the exploration of pedagogy and reflective teaching practices. The Associate Dean also works with other administrative units, Deans and Chairs, and the Faculty Senate to develop appropriate policy and guidance around essential teaching and learning issues. 

Essential Functions of Position 

  • Articulate and accomplish a vision for on ground, online, and hybrid education at HNU that includes innovative models for instructional delivery that serve diverse learners.   
  • Work with leadership to help set strategic priorities related to teaching and learning excellence and innovation. 
  • Seek faculty input to understand professional development needs and foci for CETL initiatives. 
  • Lead engagement and professional development opportunities for faculty focused on evidence-based pedagogy, the innovative use of technology in teaching and learning, and inclusive teaching practices. 
  • Develop and lead Scholarship of Teaching and Learning initiatives that directly support faculty in research related to pedagogy in their disciplines. 
  • Supervise and mentor Senior Instructional Designer and junior level instructional design staff. 
  • Oversee Quality Matters and other peer review programs for online courses. 
  • Collaborate with Deans, Senior Instructional Designer and other academic leaders to plan online and hybrid programs, develop pedagogical approaches, and institute policies to support successful online teaching and learning. 
  • Work with Senior Instructional Designer to refine online course design, development, and implementation processes. 
  • Collaborate with student services offices, enrollment management, and marketing to plan and implement recruitment and student services for online and hybrid students. 
  • Collaborate with Faculty Senate committees to develop and formalize policy around essential teaching and learning issues. 
  • Collaborate with the Director of Information Technology Services to ensure the integration, availability and support of essential educational technology tools, and the testing, piloting and implementation of new technologies for teaching and learning. 
  • Work with Advancement on grant proposals related to teaching and learning and reporting for current grants. 
  • Work with VP of Enrollment and Marketing Director to ensure that online program branding and recruitment practices are aligned with and reflect program objectives and pedagogical approaches. 
  • Create and manage budgets for personnel, grants, equipment, and technology. 

Minimum Education 
Ph.D. or terminal degree in related field. 

Experience Required

  • Significant experience in a leadership position in an organization focused on teaching and learning including program building, project management, administration, budget oversight, staff supervision, and financial responsibility. 
  • Expertise in pedagogy and a demonstrated knowledge of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) 
  • Experience in instructional design, preferably managing an online course design process.  
  • Experience contributing to grant proposals and implementing grant-funded programs 
  • Significant knowledge of and experience with digital learning and educational technologies. 
  • A successful college level teaching record. 
  • Demonstrated ability to create an open, engaging, and safe environment where faculty can reflect upon, share, and experiment with pedagogical practices. 
  • Demonstrated ability to develop professional relationships and work collaboratively with faculty at all ranks, academic leaders, and directors and staff of partner offices and units. 
  • Proven ability to successfully manage change. 
  • Cultural competence and demonstrated ability to successfully engage faculty in adopting teaching practices that support diverse learners including first generation college students, low income students, returning students, and students of color.

The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) is committed to advancing evidence-based pedagogy, technology-enriched learning, and holistic assessment. CETL works with HNU faculty in a collaborative and participatory manner to support innovative teaching. Through consultation and training, CETL fosters transformational student learning both in and out of the classroom. All services and programs are offered to both full and part-time faculty.
